How do I write?
Between yesterday and today, I met three people who asked to check my Instagram page.
Before you start calling me a ritualist, they were friends, not prospects.
The three of them complimented my page and went ahead to point out that they love my writing style.
I’ve gone through my page up to 5 times since yesterday and I still can’t find the style they were talking about.
That is the main reason I came here this morning, to ask you, how do I write?
Since I’m the writer and I don’t know how I write, perhaps you would know, as the reader.
When I came into the content writing space, I used to worry about how I write.
I was worried because I didn’t want to sound too serious and push my audience away.
I had and still have a contact list filled with young people.
I couldn’t write to young people in a steady, serious tone.
It would scare them, and most of them would not be able to relate to my brand.
Since I’m building my brand on growth and accountability, I need these young persons to relate easily with me.
I need them to be able to share their needs and have fun being accountable to me.
I kept this in mind and anytime I read my letters and they sound too serious, I tweak it and add a little humor.
Sometimes, I send them out, read them again and go to my friend who helps me edit, to complain about how I’m deviating from my writing style.
He will read again, and tell me I sound just like me, and there’s nothing wrong with my content.
I kept this on until I discovered that a writing style is built over time.
As a person who is new to the writing or content writing field, you may not have a writing style.
This is because you’re testing the waters. You’re learning from different individuals and you’re trying out different writing styles to find out which one fits you.
This can keep happening for a while until you start building a pattern.
As the pattern forms up, your content style begins to develop.
While it develops, you may not notice it, but experts and other people who constantly consume your content will start to notice your style (my predicament right now).
With time, you start identifying with this style too.
The truth is, there is no particular template for building a writing style.
However, I will share something that helped me, and perhaps it will help you too.
I’ve shared it already but in case you missed it, I will reiterate.
Knowing my audience and what I’m building a brand on helped me develop a writing style that I didn’t even know about till yesterday.
According to the feedback I got, my content has a fine blend of humor and strictness(I don’t sound too serious nor too playful), and that is exactly what an accountability brand needs.
Therefore Ladies and Gentlemen, in case you’re thinking constantly about your writing style and if you’ve developed one or not, stop doing that,
Think about your brand and what you stand for, and your style will be formed automatically.
I’ll talk to you again on Wednesday and this time I won’t be talking about content writing. I will be giving you first-hand gist about the job I told you I got in my previous newsletter.
Today is my first day, and by Wednesday, I will let you know if they sacked me or not.
Stay amazing for me,
Bridget here.
