I got the job.
Let's start with the good news.
In my previous newsletter, I talked about an offer I got and how I felt I was not good enough for it. Do you remember?
I also talked about how I was able to boost my confidence and apply for the job.
The good news is, I got the job.
I got the job because I made a move.
I wouldn't have gotten the job if I had allowed my insecurities to get the best of me.
Anyway, that's not what I'm here to discuss this morning. I promised to let you know why Whatsapp is not a good place to build a portfolio.
A portfolio is a collection of your assets. It could be financial assets or skill assets.
Let's focus on skill assets.
Skill assets are creative works that are capable of bringing you more jobs.
Just like you hold any other asset dearly, your skill assets should be held close to your heart.
An annoying place to leave the information you hold very close to your heart or will need in the future is WhatsApp.
Last year when I began my first design challenge, I decided to immediately start building my portfolio.
Crazy as I was then, I chose Whatsapp.
I created a catalog and when I made a design I loved, I'd upload it to my Whatsapp catalog.
I did this consistently throughout the first 30 days and the 2nd 30 days.
In the end, I had a very beautiful portfolio. If I sent you to my Whatsapp catalog before now, you'll be bought. If not by the designs, it'll be the beautiful write-ups I added.
I didn't feel the need to have a portfolio elsewhere when I can just send you the link to my portfolio. By the way, Whatsapp is my base platform.
I kept updating and editing my portfolio for over one year and last month, I lost everything. So much for base platform.
I was online that night when my phone battery drained and the phone automatically went off.
I was already low on space, but I didn't think that would have an immediate effect.
When I charged, I turned on my phone and came to Whatsapp, and the first thing I got was an error message.
It felt funny at first, and I tried the usual hack, 'Close the app, force stop the app, and open again'.
It didn't work. I did that more than 4 times, and then I decided to just restore the backup. I did that and I got back most of my messages, at least from the time of my last backup.
However, my portfolio was gone. It was totally wiped and there was nothing I could do about it, except building a new one.
My beautiful and always refined portfolio was gone and that's the reality.
I felt devastated, and after feeling down for some time, I decided to move on.
However, I went ahead to study some of the things that cause constant loss of information on Whatsapp, and why you shouldn't store very important pieces of information on Whatsapp, talk more of your portfolio.
I'll be sharing these discoveries, as well as good places you can build your portfolio even without the knowledge of Web Design, on the BIG Discussion on Saturday and Sunday, by 8 pm.
Don't miss it, especially if your base platform is Whatsapp.
See you on Saturday,
Stay amazing,
Bridget here.
P.S: I didn't build my Whatsapp catalog again after this encounter. You can see for yourself here, and also join the BIG Discussion, so you don't make the same mistakes I made.
